There are a few reasons their families would have forbidden them to get married.  First of all, they're different species.  That's a big deal.  Second, Corinn was a prince, and Elsseran was a commoner from a different kingdom.  That would be politically unsound.  Third, black fairies and humans tend to dislike each other on principle, so the in-laws really wouldn't get along.  And fourth, they were under twenty when they ran away together, so no one would have respected their judgement.
