Traditionally, in fantasy, black fairies or black magic or other things labeled "black" are evil.  Well, the black fairies in Aylia's world aren't -- humans don't tend to think well of them, since they tend to be extremely unfriendly with humans, but since that's their job, it makes perfect sense.  Actually, black fairies tend to be among the smartest and most responsible people in the fairy lands.  They're just not purple, which is why the fairy royalty would be so snobbish about one of their own dating one!
