I've found there are a lot of authors out there (particularly in webcomics or other series) who think that their story gets better because they "raise the stakes" somewhere in the middle, usually by making everything worse.  Well, I don't know about you guys, but . . . I hate it when a story does that.  At its worst, that makes me feel like all the previous stuff I appreciated is now pointless, and I wind up dropping the story completely.  An audience should always have something to look forward to!
