In case you've never been in an "immersion" foreign language class before, the premise behind them is fairly simple: you speak only in the foreign language everyone is trying to learn, since that encourages people to study hard and remember more, as they try to use that language for any kind of communication within the classroom at all.  That seems to be a common method among advanced foreign language classes, but you sometimes see it in beginners' classes, too.
