As the last panel of Strip #1,117 implies, new fields of magic spring up sometimes, just like new fields of science, art, or whatever do.  Wizardry is thought to be the oldest magical system, which is one of the reasons it tends to get confused with magic in general; witchcraft and alchemy appeared afterwards, and sorcery came last, though it's now mostly extinct -- it is still used by a lot of wizards (like Aylia's dad) as a secondary field, but very few magic-users call themselves "sorcerers" anymore.
