In old times, we used to reckon our time by the reign of kings, or other important events.  Since Aylia's world is at about that level of technology, it's not surprising that they'd calendar things similarly.  I imagine there are official dates, too, but who's going to use those if more interesting ones are available?  Particularly if you're dealing with books written by wizards, who will date things however they want to.  No one's going to tell a wizard to officialize all the dates in his book!
