This was one of those strips I just made up as I went along, and the punchline jumped right in place without any effort on my part.  I love it when that happens!  It's always annoying when you have the opposite situation, and can't get a decent punchline to arrive at the end of the strip, no matter what you do.  When that happens, I usually just put the sketchbook away, and hope that inspiration will strike in the next few days.
