I've noticed those of us in Western culture tend to assume "all arranged marriages are awful," and the ridiculously common anime/manga stereotype of a fiance/fiancee as a main character's romantic rival preys on this attitude even more.  While of course it's true that some arranged marriages should never happen, there are also times when structured matchmaking can be appropriate and beneficial -- which is why many cultures have practiced this throughout history.  Thus the Gorgon's is one that does so benignly.
