Yes, the reasons behind keeping magic secret to the people of our world weren't particularly brilliant and inspired -- but then, when you consider that they stem from an academic desire to study a place without changing it too noticeably, the reasons make sense.  Also, until Aylia's world was comfortable with the idea of actually interacting with ours, why would they want our world to find out theirs existed out there?  After all, for all they knew, we might have been dangerous, conquering savages.
