Yes, that really is Joralan's attitude -- and always has been.  He's always taken the attitude that he doesn't particularly care what his children are doing, unless his wife has an opinion -- and then, instead of looking at the situation, he'll just take her side automatically.  While it's certainly not right to regularly side with children over one's spouse, and solidarity between parents is a good thing, Joralan takes this idea to a ridiculous extreme.  Mainly, I suspect, because he can't be bothered to care otherwise.
