This strip illustrates why I've always objected to "curve" grading.  In my opinion, learning should be something that is very individual and personal, and grading people at all tends to detract from that, since a lot of students tend to learn things "for the test" and then forget them afterwards, rather than focusing on long-term learning that doesn't have as many short-term rewards.  But there's nothing worse than grading on the curve and making students compete with each other -- talk about damaging self-motivation!
