By the way, most mermaid musicians -- including the celebrated Sirens singing group -- are not actually malicious, just eager to giggle at people who take their bait.  So, yes, they have no problems whatsoever with sailors smashing their boats because they couldn't concentrate on their work, but almost all would immediately go rescue anyone who looked like they were drowning, afterwards.  Most sailors would be too resentful about their smashed boats to be thankful for that, however.
