A major advantage to passing on power willingly to successors like that -- aside from not having to worry about being assassinated -- is that the power transition tends to be a smooth one, since the new rulers continue to go to the old ones for advice and help until they're learned the ropes enough to handle things on their own.  Power transitions also tend to happen gradually over the course of two or three years, with the official announcement transferring authority made somewhere in the middle.
