Adelaide is more or less the equivalent of a graduate student at the wizarding school.  Her focus, magical theory, is something like majoring in art history instead of in art: it's much more academic than creative, there's very little practical work that relates to the discipline, and it's something many people choose who like the discipline, but don't necessarily like to do it themselves.  Or you could compare it to a science major, such as physics, since her focus has to do with how their world works.
