Cecelia also has another person she has to worry about, too: Gavin.  She needs to know all about dragon society, not just to be able to survive herself, but to be able to raise him to be able to function in the society he'll need to understand how to be a part of.  His family's already known for eccentricity -- Cecelia can't afford to let him grow up ignorant about anything he needs to know, and she can't depend on Daria to help her learn a lot of things she might need to teach Gavin, either.
