If you've looked at the characters page, you'll notice Aylia's father's focus when he was training to be a wizard was magical objects.  He's terrible with spells, as we've seen on more than one occasion, but he's actually fairly good with magical objects, the thing he chose to specialize in.  Which would explain why his magic mirror worked so well on Alassa when she borrowed it without permission, so long ago -- he'd probably enchanted the thing himself, after all.
