Well, okay, the sages might not be ancient . . . she might even have chosen sages from the right time period for the assignment.  But knowing her, ancient ones seem more likely.  And yes, sages are the equivalent of philosophers in Aylia's world -- and is that any surprise?  They are very similar professions, in a lot of ways.
