I didn't originally intend James to be their dog; it's just one of those things that . . . happened.  Of course, then I had to try to figure out a way to make things work so it could have happened without magic, since Lionel wouldn't have access to any.  And then I remembered that Loretta's family is rich, and it was pretty easy to figure out how things could have worked after that.  You know, if our family had been like Loretta's when my brother was ten, I bet he would've done the same thing . . .
