How do you buy time when your mother's standing right outside, waiting to be let in?  Remember, Aylia's supposed to not have anything magic here . . . in fact, she's supposed to be pretending she's not from her own world at all.  And Aylia definitely doesn't want to get in trouble, especially if it might make her mother realize she hasn't been doing things as her mother wants . . . the last thing she needs is more supervision!
