I've never been fond of the "werewolves are horrible monstrous beasts on the full moon and completely normal all the rest of the time" theory.  Sure, that's how most of the legends started, but since werewolves and vampires started out as the same thing originally, too, that doesn't do much to convince me.  So my personal theory of werewolves is that their wolf sides wax and wane with the moon, becoming irresistable during the full moon and unreachable during the new moon.
